Tips for First Meet Success (From a Gym Mom Who’s Been There)

Your gymnast’s first meet is exciting, emotional, and full of tiny details you don’t realize matter until you’re living them. These simple, mom‑tested tips make the day smoother for both of you.

Arrive Early — Earlier Than You Think

Give yourself plenty of time to:

  • Park

  • Find the entrance and meet location within the building

  • Check in

  • Fix hair

  • Use the restroom

  • Take a breath

Nothing spikes nerves like rushing. Arriving early helps your gymnast feel calm, confident, and ready.

Check the Entrance Fee — And Payment Method

Some meets charge admission for spectators, and the payment method varies:

  • Cash only

  • Card only

  • Cash preferred

  • Digital payment options

Avoid the awkward “I didn’t bring cash” moment by checking ahead of time. Your gym or the meet host usually shares this info in advance. If not, you can search the name of the meet and typically find that information online on the event site or meet maker site.

Bring Extra Hair Supplies

Hair has a mind of its own on meet day. Pack:

  • Extra hair ties

  • Bobby pins

  • Clips

  • Hairspray

  • A small brush

Even the most secure bun can unravel at the worst moment.

Pack Light, But Smart

A small bag with:

  • Water

  • A light, non‑messy snack

  • Warm‑ups

  • Grips & wrist bands (if they use them)

  • Lip balm

  • Tissues

You don’t need a suitcase — just the essentials.

Never Step Onto the Competition Floor

No matter what happens — a fall, a tear, a crooked ponytail — only coaches are allowed on the floor. Parents should never walk onto the competition area as the entire team could be penalized - ouch!

Your gymnast needs to know:

  • You’re watching

  • You’re cheering

  • You’re proud

But the competition area is for athletes and coaches only.

Cheer Loudly, Support Quietly

Your gymnast will hear your voice. Cheer when they salute. Cheer when they finish. Cheer when they smile.

Some meets will offer wish-o-grams where messages are read to gymnasts & spectators during warm-ups. And yes, they really do hear them and my daughter always listened for hers to be read.

But avoid:

  • Coaching from the stands

  • Calling out corrections

  • Reacting dramatically to mistakes

Your calm energy helps them stay grounded.

Dress Comfortably

Meets can last several hours. Bleachers are not your friend. Bring:

  • A cushion

  • A sweater (venues can be chilly)

  • Comfortable shoes

  • Money for snacks

You’ll thank yourself later.

Use Real‑Time Scoring Apps (If Available)

Some meets use platforms like MeetScoresOnline, MyMeetScores, or ScoreFlippers where you can follow scores as they’re posted.

Not every meet uses these, but when they do, it’s a fun way to:

  • Track your gymnast’s scores

  • See team standings

  • Follow along without waiting for awards

Just remember: scores are only one small part of the day.

Expect the Unexpected

Meets run on “gymnastics time.” Sometimes they start early. Sometimes they run late. Sometimes rotations move fast. Sometimes they crawl.

Flexibility is your best friend.

Keep the Car Ride Home Positive

No matter how the meet went:

  • Celebrate effort

  • Ask what they enjoyed

  • Highlight something they did well

Your gymnast will remember your reaction more than their score.

Have Fun — Really

Meet days are magical. You’ll see your gymnast shine, cheer with other parents, and feel the energy of the sport in a whole new way.

Take it in. Enjoy it. You’ll never forget their first meet.
