Level 3 Bars: A Parent’s Guide to Skills, Scoring & What Judges Are Actually Looking For

From one gymnastics parent to another — this is the level where bars finally start to make sense

Level 3 bars is such a fun turning point. Suddenly the routines look more like “real gymnastics,” the skills connect more smoothly, and your gymnast starts to feel strong and confident on the bar.

But… it’s also the event where scores can swing wildly because form deductions add up super-fast.

Let’s break it all down so you can watch your gymnast’s routine and actually understand what’s happening up there.

What Level 3 Bars Is Really About

At this level, gymnasts are building:

  • Stronger casts

  • Better body shapes

  • More control in circles

  • Clean connections (moving from one skill to the next)

  • Confidence in moving around the bar

Level 3 introduces skills that require more strength and precision — especially the cast to horizontal and the back hip circle — but the focus is still on clean basics, not big skills.

How Scoring Works at Level 3

Just like the other events:

  • Start value is 10.0

  • Judges deduct for form, rhythm, body shapes, and control

Deduction Ranges

  • Small → 0.05

  • Medium → 0.10–0.20

  • Large → 0.30–0.50

  • Fall → 0.50

Bars is an event where form deductions (bent arms, bent legs, flexed feet) stack up quickly.

Key Shapes Judges Watch Constantly

Bars is ALL about shapes. If the shapes are clean, the routine scores well.

1. Front Support Position

Used in the pullover, cast, and circle

Judges want:

  • Straight arms

  • Hips touching the bar

  • Tight, straight body

Deductions:

  • Bent arms → up to 0.30

  • Hips off bar → up to 0.20

  • Arch or loose body → up to 0.20

2. Hollow Body Shape

Used in casts and circles

Judges want:

  • Slight rounded core

  • Ribs in

  • Tight stomach

Deductions:

  • Loose core → 0.10–0.20

  • Arch instead of hollow → up to 0.20

3. Straight Body Line

Used everywhere throughout the routine

Judges want:

  • Straight legs

  • Pointed toes

  • Tight posture

Deductions:

  • Bent knees → 0.10–0.30

  • Flexed feet → 0.05–0.10

  • Loose legs → up to 0.20

Skill-by-Skill Breakdown (What Judges Want + Common Deductions)

Level 3 bars routines are fairly standard across programs. Here are the core skills and what judges look for.

1. Pullover

The routine starts here

Judges want:

  • Smooth, continuous motion

  • Controlled finish in front support

Deductions:

  • Big struggle → 0.20–0.30

  • Jumping hard off the floor → up to 0.30

  • Bent arms → up to 0.30

2. Cast to Horizontal

This is the BIG skill at Level 3

Judges want:

  • Straight arms

  • Tight body

  • Cast reaching horizontal (hips at bar height)

Deductions:

  • Cast below horizontal → up to 0.30

  • Bent arms → up to 0.30

  • Arch → 0.10–0.20

  • Legs apart → up to 0.20

This is where many gymnasts lose the most points.

3. Back Hip Circle

A classic Level 3 skill

Judges want:

  • Hips glued to the bar

  • Smooth, continuous circle

  • Controlled return to front support

Deductions:

  • Hips coming off bar → 0.10–0.30

  • Stopping or pausing → up to 0.50

  • Bent arms → up to 0.30

  • Using momentum instead of control → up to 0.20

4. Cast + Sole Circle or Underswing Dismount

Depending on the program, the dismount may vary slightly

Judges want:

  • Clean push away

  • Straight body

  • Controlled landing

  • Strong, confident finish

Deductions:

  • Low height → up to 0.20

  • Bent legs → up to 0.30

  • Step → 0.05–0.10

  • Hop → up to 0.20

The Hidden Deductions the Untrained Eye Might Miss

These are the ones that quietly lower scores:

  • Bent arms throughout the routine

  • Flexed feet

  • Legs apart in casts or circles

  • Pauses between skills

  • Arching instead of hollow

  • Hips not touching the bar in the circle

  • Low cast

Bars is the event where “little things” matter the most.

What Parents Might Celebrate at Meets

Instead of focusing on the score, look for:

✔ A smoother pullover

✔ A higher cast than last meet

✔ Straighter legs in the circle

✔ Fewer pauses

✔ A more confident dismount

These are the real signs of progress!

Why Level 3 Bars Matters Long-Term

This level builds the foundation for:

  • Clear hips

  • Kip development

  • Stronger casts

  • Giants later on

  • Higher-level bar routines

Level 3 bars is where strength, shapes, and confidence start coming together.
