Parents: Welcome to the World of Understanding Competitive Team Gymnastics

A parent's resource for understanding team competitive artistic gymnastics.

Gymnastics meet with fans watching and a gymnast doing a floor routine.

If you had told me years ago that I’d one day, be a “gymnastics mom,” I probably would’ve laughed.

My daughter and I started with a simple Mommy‑and‑Me class — something fun to do on Saturday mornings, a way to burn toddler energy and maybe meet a few other parents.

But then something happened. My daughter fell in love with gymnastics. Not the casual, “this is fun” kind of love — the full‑body, sparkly‑eyes, cartwheels‑everywhere kind of love.

She moved from recreational classes to developmental ones, and before I knew it, she aged up and was invited to join team. And that’s when I realized:

I had absolutely no idea what we were getting into.

I didn’t understand what “team” really meant. I didn’t know why there were levels. I didn’t know what organization our gym belonged to or why that mattered. And at her first few meets, I clapped at all the wrong times because I genuinely didn’t know what I was watching.

So, I did what most confused parents do:

  • I learned.

  • I asked questions.

  • I listened to coaches.

  • I studied online like I was preparing for a final exam I didn’t know I’d signed up for.

Somewhere during this process, I fell in love with the sport of gymnastics and the bond it built with my daughter. Now I want to share everything I’ve learned with you — so you don’t have to piece it together the hard way. Who knows, maybe you'll even fall in love with gymnastics yourself.

What competitive “Team Gymnastics” Actually Means

When a gym says “team,” they’re talking about competitive gymnastics. That usually includes:

  • Training multiple days per week

  • Learning choreographed routines for each event

  • Competing at meets against other gyms

  • Collecting more scrunchies, leotards, and bobby pins than you ever thought possible

Gyms can belong to different competitive organizations, such as:

  • USAG (USA Gymnastics)

  • NGA (National Gymnastics Association)

  • AAU

  • Local, regional, or independent leagues

Each program has its own rules, levels, and quirks, but the heart of it is the same everywhere: safe skill development, confidence building, and long‑term athlete growth.

Think of it like different school districts — same subjects, slightly different systems.

What This Blog Is Here to Do

This space is for parents who are new to the sport — the ones who want to cheer confidently, understand what they’re watching, and support their gymnast without feeling overwhelmed.

We’ll walk through:

  • How developmental and competitive programs work

  • What levels and divisions mean (and why they’re not as scary as they sound)

  • How scoring generally works

  • How to support your gymnast through the ups, downs, and occasional chalk‑covered car rides

  • & much more...

No prior gymnastics knowledge required. Just curiosity, a sense of humor, and maybe a spare hair tie.
